Waterbird Hydro-Aeroplane on Windermere in September 2015

21 Apr 2015 14:31 | Anonymous member (Administrator)

Though not directly about steam boating, Windermere and visiting steam boaters may be interested in this bit of new technology from the golden age of steam.

Waterbird was the first floatplane to take off and land outside America and France and all the development work and flights took place on Windermere in 1911. (www.waterbirdproject.com)

The Lakes Flying Company has been set up to commemorate and promote these events (www.waterbird.org.uk)

They have built a replica float plane which will be brought to Windermere over the weekend of 12/13 September 2015 and is scheduled to fly on 17 September.

See the events section.
